The 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated at Cairo Opera House on 2nd Oct. Amb. Rahul Kulshresth and Egyptian Asst. Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs, Amb. Khaled Sarwat released the commemorative stamps issued by the Department of the Posts, GOI. The celebration included garlanding of Gandhi’s bust, an exhibition on Mahatma Gandhi’s life, a documentary film show and Screening of the famous song “Vaishnav Jan To” sung by the Egyptian singer Dr. Reem Ezz. A Vegetarian Food Festival was also hosted.

MACIC Inaugurated the photo exhibition of "Kanu's Gandhi"- an exhibition of rare photos taken by Kanu Gandhi, grandnephew of Mahatma Gandhi, at El Hanager Gallery, Cairo Opera House grounds, on 6/11/18.  The same exhibition was opened in in Bibliotheca Alexandrina on 12/11/18.

"Satya Vaarta", a roundtable discussion on Mahatma Gandhi was conducted on 8/11/18 at El Hanager Gallery. Amb. Gilan Allam, Amb. Mohamed Higazi, Amb. Abdel Monem Al Shazly, (former Ambassadors of Egypt) and Dr. Hala Abul Foutoh, Cairo University, participated in the panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Liyaqath Ali, Director, MACIC.

To mark the anniversary, special outreach programs were conducted at the Cultural Garden on 23 Oct., Pyramids Language School, Giza, on 1 Nov and at Al Shabab School, on 4 Nov 2018 .The programme in each venue included a presentation on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, screening of documentary and Yoga sessions.

A “Khadi Exhibition” was inaugurated on 24/01/19, and the Exhibition was inaugurated by Shri Rahul Kulshreshth, Ambassador of India at MACIC Hall. The exhibition showcased premium products of Khadi including different fabrics, cosmetics and village industries products.

As part of the celebrations, MACIC organized two seminars – the first at Cairo University on Feb. 17, 2019, and the second at Ain Shams University on Feb. 18, 2019 and "Gandhi Katha" (a presentation on Mahatma Gandhi’s Life and Message - in Hindi) at MACIC on Feb. 19, 2019. The Keynote Address was delivered in all these three events by Ms. Shobhana Radhakrishna, Chief Functionary, Gandhian Forum for Ethical Corporate Governance, India.

The Embassy, in coordination with American University Cairo (AUC) organized a plantation drive of 150 saplings in AUC Gardens, New Cairo Campus as a part of 150th Birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi on 29th May 2019. The event was attended by Mrs. Raymonda Raif, Executive Director (Alumni Engagement) from the AUC and Mr. Kshitij Tyagi (SS, Pol and Info) and other officials.

The Embassy, in co-ordination with Cycling Geckos, a prominent group of women cyclists in Cairo, organized a 150 minute long cycling event, commemorating 150 years of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary, within the city on 6th April 2019. During the event which began in Dokki and ended at the embassy premises in Zamalek, the cyclists distributed food supply kits to a few needy families in the neighborhood along their route. Women from various walks of life participated in the event, which was aimed at spreading Gandhi’s messages of leading a healthy and environment-friendly lifestyle and compassion towards the poor.

As part of the India for Humanity programme commemorating the yearlong celebrations of 150 years of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary, a Jaipur Foot Artificial Limb Fitment Camp was inaugurated by Her Excellency Ms Ghada Wali, the Minister of Social Solidarity, H.E.Major General Gamal Nour El Din, Governor of Assiut Province and Amb. Rahul Kulshresth on 2nd May 2019 in Assiut Governorate. Under this, 500 persons with disabilities were provided artificial limbs completely free of cost. The camp was supported by the Ministry of Social Solidarity of the Government of Egypt.
