Kathak Sandhya - a mesmerizing evening of Indian classical dance

The Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture, Embassy of India in Cairo organized ‘Kathak Sandhya’, a mesmerizing evening dedicated to Kathak, one of India’s most celebrated classical dance traditions. The event took place at the historic Ewart Hall, AUC Tahrir Square, Cairo on 30 June 2025 and was attended by a distinguished audience including senior government officials, former ambassadors, and members of the diplomatic corps.

The packed hall resonated with vibrant rhythms and expressive performances, reflecting a growing passion for Indian classical arts among the Egyptian public. The audience’s enthusiastic response created an electric atmosphere, underscoring the deepening cultural ties between India and Egypt.

Ambassador Suresh K. Reddy, in his opening remarks, highlighted the growing popularity of Kathak in Egypt, noting that the dance program introduced by MACIC in 2022 has seen remarkable success. In just three years, over 100 Egyptian students have enrolled and successfully completed advanced levels of Kathak training. He applauded the dedication and artistic excellence of the Egyptian students and commended their genuine interest in Indian culture.

Kathak, one of India’s eight major classical dance forms, has its origins in the storytelling traditions of ancient Kathakars — itinerant bards of North India who used dance and rhythm to narrate mythological tales. Over time, Kathak evolved from devotional temple performances into a sophisticated court art under Mughal and Rajput patronage. Known for its graceful pirouettes, intricate footwork, expressive gestures, and compelling storytelling, Kathak remains a dynamic and captivating form of cultural expression across the world.

The evening unfolded with a captivating performance by the Teacher of Indian Culture, accompanied by the talented students of MACIC, leaving the audience thoroughly enthralled. The program opened with Guru Vandana, a traditional tribute to the teacher, followed by a soulful Saraswati Vandana, invoking the goddess of wisdom through expressive dance and narration. Each segment beautifully showcased the depth and elegance of Kathak, drawing admiration for its rhythmic precision, fluid movements, and emotive expressions. The performance was met with wide acclaim, as the audience remained spellbound throughout the evening.

‘Kathak Sandhya’ not only celebrated India’s classical heritage but also stood as a testament to the cultural bridge being built between India and Egypt through shared appreciation and artistic collaboration.
