Clarification on India’s Oil Imports from Russia
- India has been targeted by the United States and the European Union for importing oil from Russia after the Ukraine conflict began. In fact, India started importing from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the conflict erupted. The US had encouraged India at that time to stabilize global energy markets.
- India’s imports aim to ensure affordable and predictable energy supply for Indian consumers – a necessity dictated by global market conditions. Ironically, the same countries criticizing India continue their own trade with Russia, which unlike India’s case, is not a national necessity.
- In 2024, EU’s bilateral trade in goods with Russia reached €67.5 billion. Additionally, EU’s trade in services was estimated at €17.2 billion in 2023 – much higher than India-Russia trade during that period. Europe’s LNG imports hit a record 16.5 million tonnes in 2024, surpassing the 2022 record of 15.21 million tonnes.
- EU-Russia trade covers not only energy but also fertilizers, minerals, chemicals, steel, machinery, and transport equipment.
- The US continues importing uranium hexafluoride for nuclear industry, palladium for EVs, fertilizers, and chemicals from Russia.
- Therefore, targeting India is unjustified and unreasonable. Like any major economy, India will take all necessary steps to protect its national interests and economic security.
